How to Become a Wood River Fire & Rescue Volunteer

Interested in becoming a volunteer for Wood River Fire & Rescue? If so, below is a list of some of the requirements that volunteers are expected to meet.


Initial Requirements

1. Live within the Fire District boundaries.

2. Successfully complete the State Certified Basic Essentials of Firefighting course. The Essentials course begins in September and ends mid to late November. The course typically has classroom sessions every Thursday night and hands on training at least 1 Saturday a month. (Cadets shall not receive pay for class attendance.)

3. Log a minimum of four hours of apparatus, tools, and equipment familiarization at the fire station.

4. After successfully completing the Essentials of Firefighting course, the cadet will be evaluated on attendance, performance, test scores and instructor evaluation. Cadets shall not receive pay until they have been offered and have accepted a probationary volunteer paid-call position on the department.


Probation

Each new Firefighter shall be placed on probation for approximately 1 year. During this time the firefighter is expected to complete the following items:

1. Pass the Wood River Fire and Rescue physical agility test.

2. Hold a valid Idaho Driver's License.

3. Maintain 70% drill attendance.

4. Respond to around 8%-10% of emergency calls.

5. Complete a CPR Health Care Provider class.

6. Complete an Infectious Control class.

7. Complete one 24-hour shift at Station 1. (No pay provided except for emergency response.)

8. Complete Incident Command System class.

9. Complete Hazardous Materials Operations class.
