Wood River Fire & Rescue Extrication Information

(Click on for larger picture)

One of the more common types of calls that we handle are car wrecks. Car wrecks can vary from a single car being involved or multiple cars being involved. As a department we train weekly for all types of calls, from Fire to EMS calls. Extrication is just one of the many things that we train to handle. The pictures here are from our latest extrication class, which included two other departments in the valley, Hailey Fire and Ketchum Fire & Rescue. What is the purpose of extrication? Extrication is the removal of victims from any type of item, most frequently cars. Some extrications can require simple tools and other can require the use of the larger "jaws of life" along with other hydraulic powered equipment, powered saws, and more. Not every car wreck requires extrication to that extent.

The vehicle shown can give you an idea of what we are capable of doing in order to get to a victim. Using a "spreader" to open a door can also be considered extrication. Some accidents do come around when we have no other choice but to remove the roof the doors completely. By doing this, we are able to remove he victims with absolute minimum bending and twisting of their body. Other extrication jobs can involve removing any part of the vehicle from a victim that is trapped by that part, such as a steering wheel or dashboard.
